The Unity Medals․

I designed once-in-a-lifetime Unity Medals for the four 2020 Indian marathons in collaboration with Procam International. They were envisioned as symbols of hope and resilience during the pandemic. The design consists of 2 interlocked rings. The spokes of the inner ring increase in height and width in the clockwise direction. Contrastingly, the spokes out of outer ring decrease in height and width in this direction. The layering of these two opposing forms creates an illusion similar to a Möbius strip, one that has no beginning and no end but exists in perfect equilibrium. Mathematically, the width of each spoke is incrementally larger than the one before it, which forces the eye to follow the pattern concentrically. When one reaches the end of a chakra, their eye is instantly drawn into the second ring where the pattern reverses. This process can continue infinitely.

The form of the Möbius strip is most often associated with the concepts of unity and non-duality, because two edges are joined to become one side in the construction of the strip. Some even consider the Möbius band to be a fitting symbol for the relationship of space and time in the universe - they appear to be separate, like the two sides of the Möbius strip, but there actually is no separation; space and time are not distinct and are united to form our universe.

Through the simple act of increasing the width of the spokes, a multi-layered design approach is crafted that refers to the twenty-four tenets of the Ashoka Chakra, the spirit of the four Indian cities, and the unity, continuity, and connectedness of one nation. It doesn’t matter what side of the strip you start on, or what direction you take, you will always meet on the same side. And that is the strength of India.
