Saudade․

In collaboration with Mural Republic

In the summer of 2022, Birmingham played proud host to over 6,500 athletes and officials from the 71 territories of the Commonwealth. The Games represented a once in a lifetime event for Birmingham as citizens and the hundreds of thousands of people visited the City. The Birmingham City Council approached Mural Republic to help them with their CSM Live city dressing program for the Games and Paint Spectrum Birmingham was born. Mural Republic worked with the council to identify impactful locations across the city’s neighbourhoods to host the artworks.

I was one of the artists selected from their extensive search of local Birmingham and international commonwealth artists. My design was produced by Mural Republic painters over an intensive 5-week period in the run up to the event across the city.

My mural titled Saudade, illustrates architectural elements from the city of Birmingham. Each window is from a different place in the city. These are overlaid with symbols of South Asian identity. The city now becomes a fractured collection of seemingly mundane spaces and places that produce connections (social and material) with other spaces, places, and locales within and beyond the city.

What is Saudade?

Saudade [soh-dahd; Portuguese soh-dah-juh] is a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for something or someone that one cares for and/or loves.

Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never be had again. It is the recollection of feelings, experiences, places, or events that once brought excitement, pleasure, and well-being, which now trigger the senses and make one experience the pain of separation from those joyous sensations.
